a dream of the alternate universe

(a sword draws a passage)

and so we'll run away
(if we only could)
to an island lost from view
and there we'll live as the islanders do

we'll make a home of reeds
and coconut leaves
and weave with our hands
a hammock for two

we'll sleep beneath a dome of stars
and you'll build a ship to sail
across the tides until the long day's through

and you'll come home to me
and we'll be free
as the winds that kiss the sand and sea

and we'll be free

(and when we're old
we'll love each other still
till our bones crackle
like seashells in a tumbling surf)

and when it's time to die
(and we'll know when and why)
we'll wade out into the darkening storm
into the currents vast and warm
and give each other one long, last

salty kiss

and sink our souls into the sea
and we'll be free
